Our staff is made up of seasoned board game players whose love for these games translates into every interaction they have with our campers.  We'll learn together through lessons on sportsmanship, organization, as well as techniques that allow the children to teach the games themselves.  Our goal is to empower each of our campers with the knowledge and ability to share these complex games with their family and friends - building skill sets that extend into the world outside of our adventure camps!

Chess has been around for over two thousand years.  This Summer, come and explore what board games are being developed today that share the same timeless gameplay and strategic depth.

South Bay Camps will offer chess instruction in the mornings and then our modern board game class in the afternoon, introducing your child to some of the most critically acclaimed and mathematically brilliant board games in the world while still keeping the focus on chess.

East Bay Camps will offer 5 days of chess followed by 5 days of modern board games.  In addition, our Cardboard Club meets in our game room on Fridays and offers a similar set of classes that you'll find in our summer board game camps.

Here are some of the games we will be exploring:

Tzolkin box

Krosmaster Arena is a brand new tactical
board game.  Much like chess, players
take turns moving unique pieces while
concentrating on out maneuvering their
opponents.  Unlike chess however, this
game uses a full 3D terrain board, mechanics
like line-of-sight, and amazing miniatures!

Boardgaming.com says Krosmaster Arena is

"Absolutely accessible to families especially ones with children who enjoy video games."

..and that it

"...succeeds on many levels. It’s a good game for adults, but it’s clear that this game excels as a game to share with children."

Mage Knight Box

With elegantly simple gameplay, Ticket to Ride
can be learned in under 15 minutes, while
providing players with intense strategic and
tactical decisions every turn. Players collect
cards of various types of train cars they then
use to build railway routes in North America.
The longer the routes, the more points they earn.

Alien Frontiers may look like a luck based
game with all its die, but this masterpiece
rises above mere chance, tasking players
with calculating odds, modifying their rolls,
and tactically controlling the board with their
colonies.  A little like Yatzi meets Chess,
this game is a real mind grinder, and for
that reason, a favorite among our teachers.

stone age box

Struggle to survive in the Stone Age by
working as hunters, collectors, farmers,
and tool makers. This worker placement
game was released in 2008 and has received
great praise from game designers and
teachers alike.  Its beautiful board and
elegant rules combine seamlessly with mechanics
that reinforce planning ahead, calculating
odds, and simple division skills.
